Diesel exhaust, as common sense prevails need not be good for health and definitely bad. It contains many harmful elements like;
· Carbon (soot),
· Nitrogen,
· Water,
· Carbon monoxide,
· Aldehydes,
· Nitrogen dioxide,
· Sulphur dioxide,
· Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,
· Particulate matter.
The particulate matters are particularly dangerous in causing lungs diseases. Matters less than 100 nanometers may penetrate lungs tissue and get access to the blood circulation; that may get deposited in brain to cause Alzheimer’s disease like symptoms; and may cause atherosclerosis.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPH) may cause lung cancer; as per the research findings of a group of researchers. It may affect miners, truck drivers or persons working in railways as a occupational hazard.
They suggest that it may take long exposure time i.e. more than 10 years for miners and more than 30 years in truckers.
