Because the features appear a little late to suggest an underlying colon cancer, screening is most important. This is to be undertaken in case of;
- Polposis of colon, stomach or intestine.
- Hereditary polyposis in family.
- Chrohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis.
But, symptoms and signs those point to suspicion of colon cancer can be;
- Change in habit of defecation.
- Alternate diarrhoea with constipation.
- Bleeding per anum.
- Piles as a cause of cancer colon.
- Pain in the abdomen.
- Palpable mass in the abdomen.
In late cases.
- Enlarged liver
- Collection of water in abdomen called ascitis.
- Distance spread of disease to other organs in abdomen and out side.
It can be diagnosed following investigations like;
- Occult blood test of stool.
- Sigmoidoscopy.
- Colonoscopy.
- Contract CT.
- Barium enema and X-Rays.
However, high degree of suspicion and screening for precancerous lesions like polyposis; and surveillance of those having family history of cancer colon and precancerous conditions may be helpful in detecting early cancer.
