Some study till late in the night thinking that they are utilizing time and can remember more. But they may be wrong. It has been seen that sleep deprivation may be the cause of increased heart attacks, type II diabetes and obesity. Also, it may cause attention deficit and irritability in the following morning.

It has been seen that during sleep brain consolidates memories by increasing the level of protein to fix those in the nerve cells located in the specific areas of brain to retrieve them later. Researchers point out that sleep also seems to reorganize memories picking up the emotional details experienced in the day and reconfigure those. That can help to produce creative and new ideas at times.
In sleep brain analyzes the data of the whole day, picks up most important and crucial information; and stores those.
